Personal therapy can bring a new or renewed sense of empowerment by connecting the dots within our personal, ancestral, and spiritual histories to better understand our unique ways of moving through the world. By learning how to hold ourselves with loving grace and compassion, we are able to cultivate skills that help us establish and enforce boundaries without resorting to anger, withdrawal, or dissociation; while also maintaining a sense of inner peace and emotional stability no matter the external circumstances. Below are some common themes that come up in therapy that might be helpful to think about. Trauma
A traumatic experience can leave you feeling helpless, seriously affecting your ability to do what used to come easily. If life brings us these challenges, professional support can foster healing that reconnects you to your innate source of compassionate power. Whether you’ve experienced _____, _____, _______, I have the skills and patience to help you understand the changes in your emotions, thoughts, beliefs and behavior and to support and guide you through the recovery process. Sometimes, trauma doesn’t take the form of an event. Sometimes we experience trauma as a slow build up over time, and it becomes incorporated into our automatic movements. For example, an emotionally immature parent who wasn’t able to support their child’s feelings can produce an adult who is ill equipped to manage the vulnerability required in adult partnerships. Another example is of parents who inadvertently transmit ancestral trauma to their children, burdening them with adult problems that a child's brain is not capable of processing. Therapy can help untangle many of the patterns and coping mechanisms you’ve brought into adulthood so that you can feel confident to move with agency and feel more in control of your life.  
Generalized Anxiety
At its worst, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) can be debilitating, casting negativity on a variety of issues on the world, others, and yourself. Frequently, anxiety is connected to fears. Labeling, understanding and dissolving these fears can be cathartic and reduce feelings of anxiety and inadequacy. Over time, therapy can bring a sense of relief for people experiencing anxiety and negative emotions. It provides a safe and secure container to learn how to identify and manage triggers and any negative reactions to transform them into positive change.
Loss & Grief
During our life we will all experience many losses for example death of a loved one, divorce and loss of work. Although time and the support of those close to us soften life’s blows it is also very important that we accept the reality of loss, feel the associated feelings, adjust our life and find ways to continue and move on with our life. In bereavement therapy I will help you with this process and also enable you to find ways to reconnect with and motivate and energize yourself.

For Couples

Everything is a system. When we’re single, we’re an individual system of mind, body, and spirit. When we meet someone with whom we feel a strong connection, we might choose to enter into a two-system relationship. After the “honeymoon” stage, couples typically experience a power struggle where partners try to negotiate their wants and needs in ways that might feel competitive and negative. Sometimes there are children or other life events that delay this process, but eventually couples that need support feel hurt, unseen, and unfulfilled in their relationship. There might be feelings of hopelessness, regret, and anger– everyone feels like their needs will never be met and there is no way forward.  Unfortunately, despite their many strengths, many couples give into despair and choose to separate around this time. What many couples don’t realize is that this process in creating a couple system is very typical, and that there are many ways— spiritual, ancestral, therapeutic— to navigate this period in a relationship. My couple’s therapy approach is drawn from my doctoral research studying resilient Black couples and marries it with my decades of clinical experience to help guide couples through the transformation process required to create the expansive, compassionate, and courageous system within which partners, children, and others can feel genuine freedom. 
Imago Relationship Therapy
I apply Imago Relationship Therapy, which uses visualization and intentional dialogue instead of reaction to assist couples better understand and accept themselves and each other. Intentional dialogue enhances self-reflection and empathy resulting in improved connection between partners, which provides the connected and safe space required for healing and growth.

Academic research as well as advances in genetic testing have produced evidence that trauma and resilience are passed generationally. Taken with today’s fast modern life, clients are tired of quick fixes and superficial bonds that reinforce individualism while craving meaning and fulfillment in solid relationships. Family therapy reconnects us to our ancestral bonds allowing for our lineage to become a new source of power from which we can draw. In a playful and safe environment, clients learn how to love the past and embrace family stories that help them love themselves and re-author their own life stories.

What’s the purpose of therapy?
The purpose of therapy is to bring attention to how we’ve been on autopilot, so that we can transform into a being that is attentive to our intentions so that we may move more deliberately and meaningfully through life. Therapy brings about a successful shift in mindset. To let go of the past and to be present.
What happens in a typical therapy session?
I will invite you to share your family tree as we work together to understand the relationships you have with others so that you can understand yourself better. By gaining a deeper understanding of our relationship with ourselves, we can examine our intention, attention, and willpower which equates to meaning in our life.
How are individual therapy, couple’s, and family therapy different?
They are very similar. In individual therapy, I’m looking at you and your relationshp with yourself. In couple’s therapy I’m looking at you and your partner, and the way you’re creating your relationship. Family therapy looks at the family system, examining the interactions and dyanimcs among themselves and with each other.
How long does therapy take?
Each person and situation is different. However, a rule of thumb is not less than three months for a successful couple or particular family outcome. Sometimes it takes one session to get people back on their preferred paths. Other times, years are necessary for continuity of care and to receive help with life transitions.
How can I get the most out of my therapy experience?
Therapy can be intense. To get the most out of therapy, you’ll have to be willing to be present and courageous, to be willing to be offended and to know that what will come up is some resistance. You must also remember that you already have the gentleness, grace, and resilience to move through the resistance. Change looks hard, but it’s easy when we commit to ourselves. If you feel weak, it’s ok, but you have to have courage to look at what you feel is a weakness, and not back down until you can appreciate that weakness and see how that weakness is actually an asset.
How do I know if I’ve chosen the right therapist for me?
Trust yourself and you will know– probably by the first session. If you don’t know if you can trust yourself, then stay and find out in time.
Can I pay with insurance?
I do accept some insurance. If I don’t accept yours, I can provide superbills which you can submit for reimbursement at rates determined by your policy.
